Leather Insoles for Wide, Square-Toe and Hard-to-Fit Boots

Most boots take one of my standard insoles in your usual size. But I regularly hear from people with wide boots, square-toe boots, or feet that need something a little different. Here's what works, and when a custom pair makes sense.

Wide boots (E, EE, EEE)

My standard insoles are cut to a D width. In a wide boot they'll match the length but won't fill the full width. In most cases they still sit well in the boot, so start by ordering your boot size and checking the inch measurements on the listing. Every size shows its exact length and width next to a ruler, so you can lay it against your boot's footbed and compare.

If the fit is slightly off, a little sanding or trimming will usually shape them to your boot.

When to go custom

For very wide, square-toe, or unusually shaped boots, I can make custom-fit insoles. Custom insoles are $50. To get the shape exactly right, you may need to send me your boot's original insoles.

Custom work also covers fit problems a standard insole can't solve, like:

  • A different thickness for each foot
  • A thick heel skived down thin toward the toe, for lift without crowding your toes

If your problem is mainly heel slip, try a half insole first. It's a heel seat hand-skived to taper toward the front, and it comes in standard or long length, single or double. I wrote more about it in How to Fix Heel Slip in Boots.

One thing to know: because they're made for your boots specifically, custom insoles can't be returned. That's why I like to talk through the details with you first.

How to start a custom order

  1. Message me through the chat with your boot brand, model, and size, and what's going on with the fit.
  2. I'll tell you whether a standard insole should work or if custom is the better route.
  3. If we go custom, I'll let you know if I need your original insoles.
