UK vs US vs EU Boot Sizing: How to Convert (and Order the Right Insole)

Sizing questions come up in my inbox every week, and a lot of them come down to one thing: the boot is in UK or EU sizing, and the customer shops in US sizes. Here's how I handle it.

UK sizing (Viberg, Tricker's)

Brands like Viberg and Tricker's use UK sizing, which runs about a size different from US sizing. In my Viberg Service Boot review, a US 10 lined up with a UK 9 (EU 43).

The last matters too. Viberg's 2020 last is narrow, and the 2030 last gives more room. And some models run differently again: the Viberg Slides I have in the shop are marked 7.5 but fit like a US 8.5, because Viberg recommends sizing down 1.5 sizes on that last. I wrote more about it in this post.

Ordering insoles for UK-sized boots

My insoles are in US sizes. For UK-sized boots, size up a half. For example, for a UK 9 boot, order the US 9.5. Every listing also shows the exact length and width in inches next to a ruler, so you can compare against your boot's footbed.

EU sizes

My insoles used to be sold in EU sizes, which ran small, so I switched to US boot sizes. If you bought from me before, here's how the old sizes line up:

  • 40 = US 7
  • 42 = US 8
  • 43 = US 8.5
  • 44 = US 9
  • 45 = US 9.5
  • 46 = US 10
  • 47 = US 10.5
  • 48 = US 11
  • 49 = US 12
  • 50 = US 13

Half sizes and wide boots

For a US half size like 11.5, size down to the nearest whole size (the 11), then check the inch measurements. The insoles are a standard D width: they'll match the length of a wide boot but won't fill the full width. For very wide or unusual boots, I can make custom insoles ($50, and you may need to send me your originals).
