Rolltop Expedition leather backpack

Made-to-Order Leather Backpacks: How It Works

Every backpack I make is cut, stitched, and riveted by hand, and each one takes a long time to build. Instead of making a few and selling out, I now make them to order, in a leather we pick together.

The two styles

  • Rolltop Expedition: my signature pack. The rolltop keeps out rain and weather, and a tension-distribution strap system spreads the load across 14 rivets for a balanced, adjustable carry. About 40 hours of work and over 9 square feet of leather go into each one.
  • Scout: a smaller everyday pack with a carry handle and outer cargo compartment, about 13" x 20" x 5".

How ordering works

  1. Place your order. Both styles start at $1,000.
  2. I'll reach out with the leathers I have on hand. Availability changes with what the tanneries are making, so we pick together. Past packs have been made in Seidel Double Shot, Emerald GenX, Horween Chromexcel, Sepici, and more.
  3. Some premium leathers and customizations, like extra pockets or more depth, cost more. I'll confirm the final price before I start.
  4. I build your pack. Please allow 8 to 12 weeks.

Where it started

My very first leatherworking project was a rolltop backpack. You can read about it here, or watch the video:
