The question I get more than any other is which insole thickness to order. The short answer: most people want the medium. Here's the longer answer so you can be sure.
The three thicknesses
- Thin (5 oz), about 2mm: takes up about a half size. Good for boots that fit well and just need a leather footbed, or for sitting on top of a thin foam liner.
- Medium (10 oz), about 4mm: the standard, and my favorite. It's the most supportive and the right replacement for most removable factory insoles.
- Thick (15 oz), about 6mm: only for boots that are a full size to a size and a half too big. It fills a lot of volume, so don't go thick unless you need it.
Why veg tan leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather is firm and dense, so it supports your foot instead of collapsing like foam. It wicks moisture far better than synthetic insoles, and over time it takes on the shape of your boot's footbed and your foot. They don't need oiling or conditioning.
Quick tips
- Smooth side faces up.
- Usually, take out the factory insole and replace it with the leather one.
- Every listing shows the exact length and width in inches next to a ruler, so you can compare against your boot's footbed.
- Need more lift in the heel only? Look at a half insole instead.
